    Carter was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.[1] His parents were Cordelia "Nellie" Miranda Redington and William Thornton Carter (–), a coal and iron baron.[1] The family lived at Walnut Street in Philadelphia.[1] He attended the University of Pennsylvania, where he was a member of the class of and Fraternity of Delta Psi (St. Anthony Hall).[3][4] However, he dropped out of college to focus on polo and hunting.[5]
