    His book, Stephen Spender: The Authorized Biography (2004), was shortlisted for the Whitbread Biography Award. Recent books are How To Read a Novel: a User’s Guide (2006), and a book of memoir – The Boy Who Loved Books (2007). Curiosities of Literature, a miscellany about reading, and Magic Moments: Life-changing Encounterswith Books, Film, Music were published in 2008.

    John Elliot Sutherland (September 11, 1910 – February 17, 2001) was an American film producer.

    Sutherland was born on September 11, 1910, in Williston, North Dakota. His father, Ronald Duffas Sutherland, was a bank president overseeing several in North Dakota, South Dakota and Montana. However, the Dust Bowl caused the banking industry to collapse with a number of loan failures. His family moved to Great Falls, Montana to California.[1] There, in 1937, Sutherland graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles with a bachelor's degree in politics and economics. While working as director of UCLA's drama and debate department, he met Walt Disney through a mutual acquaintance. Disney hired him on September 12, 1938, as an assistant director on Bambi (1942).[1]

    John Andrew Sutherland (born 9 October 1938)[1] is a British academic, newspaper columnist and author. He is Emeritus Lord Northcliffe Professor of Modern English Literature at University College London.

    Biography

    After graduating from the University of Leicester in 1964, Sutherland gained a PhD from the University of Edinburgh,[2] where he began his academic career as an assistant lecturer.[3] He specialises in Victorian fiction, 20th-century literature, and the history of publishing. Among his works of scholarship is the Longman Companion to Victorian Fiction (known in the US as Stanford Companion, 1989), a comprehensive encyclopaedia of Victorian fiction. A second edition was published in 2009 with 900 biographical entries, synopses of over 600 novels, and extensive background material on publishers, reviewers, and readers.[4]
