Norwegian politician and political scientist
Espen Barth Eide (born 1 May [1]) is a Norwegian politician and political scientist. He is currently serving as the Minister of Foreign Affairs in Jonas Gahr Støre's government, having previously done so under Jens Stoltenberg. He has been a member of the Norwegian Parliament since , representing the Labour Party. He was elected to this seat in the election, and reelected in the election. On 22 August , Barth Eide was appointed United Nations special adviser on Cyprus by former UN secretary-general Ban Ki-moon.[2] He continued in this capacity under current secretary-general António Guterres until 14 August , when he stepped down from his UN role in order to engage in the election campaign in Norway.[3]

Biographical Note
United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has appointed Espen Barth Eide of Norway as his new Special Adviser on Cyprus.
Mr. Eide will assume the position formerly held by Alexander Downer of Australia, who stepped down as his Special Adviser in April. The Secretary-General expresses his gratitude to Lisa Buttenheim of the United States, his Special Representative and Head of Mission, United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), for serving as Acting Special Adviser since Mr. Downer’s departure.
Mr. Eide is a seasoned diplomat who brings to the position a deep understanding of peace processes and peacemaking.
