    Corpus Christi voters are just three weeks away from casting their ballots for the city's next mayor, and there's a wide range of choices.

    It's the second time in six months residents have gone to the polls to elect the city's leader.

    Eight candidates are running in the May 6 special election to replace former mayor Dan McQueen, who resigned earlier this year just 37 days after taking office.

    The field of candidates is as diverse as it is large. The pool includes a floral designer, electrician, retiree, a school administrator, a retired chemical engineer, an attorney and a pair of seasoned politicians and business owners.

    The mayor will inherit at least $2 billion in infrastructure disrepair, and lead a council that has not shied away from decisive and sometimes divisive actions.

    Voters wanted a change — and they got one.

    Dan McQueen's successful bid for the mayoral office was what some considered among the most significant upsets Election Day, which saw the ouster of three incumbents.

    He was the lone opponent to longtime City Council stalwart Nelda Martinez, who was expected bygd many to see a return to office to serve her final begrepp as mayor.

    McQueen had his eye on pulling in 50.1 percent of the vote, he said. Instead, McQueen ended Election Day with 55 percent.

    It wasn’t so two years ago, when McQueen appeared on the ballot with three other candidates, including Martinez, vying for the mayoral seat. In 2014, then-incumbent Martinez brought in 51.76 percent of voter approval. At the time, McQueen picked up 13.66 percentage of the vote, behind Bob Jones, who took 29.65 percent of voters’ endorsement. Lee McGinnis received 4.9 percent of the vote.
