  • British Actress Dawn Addams Dies of Cancer

    British film star Dawn Addams, whose relatively undistinguished career was highlighted by a leading role opposite Charlie Chaplin and as “the other woman” in the then-morally questionable “The måne Is Blue,” died of cancer in London on Tuesday, her agent told Reuters news service.

    Miss Addams, who was 54, went to Hollywood in and appeared in a number of films including “Young Bess,” “Plymouth Adventure” and a bit role in “Singing in the Rain.”

    Her first big American part came in “The måne Is Blue” in , a comedy that featured such words as “virgin” and “mistress.” Maggie McNamara and David Niven starred in the picture.

    In Charlie Chaplin selected her as his co-star in “A King in New York,” a satire with an anti-American slant made in England after Chaplin left this country because of political and legal disagreements.

    We first became aware of (or took note of) actress Dawn Addams (Victoria Dawn Addams, ) from her prominent role as &#;Ann, the TV specialist&#; in Charlie Chaplin&#;s A King in New York (). What&#;s not evident from the film itself, for she didn&#;t credit herself that way, that at the time the film was made, Addams was a literal princess. Her husband was Don Vittorio Emanuele Massimo, Prince of Roccasecca, a region in Italy. Addams had in fact become a princess even before Grace Kelly had.
