Recent advances of myotubularin-related (MTMR) protein family in cardiovascular diseases
1 Introduction
As a second messenger within the cell, phosphoinositides (PIPs) participate in a variety of cellular processes, such as protein transport, signal transduction, remodeling of the protein backbone, and fusion of the cell membrane. PIPs can be hydrolyzed into several kinds of substrates, phosphatase and tensin homolog deleted on chromosome ten (PTEN), myotubularin-related (MTMR) protein family, sac1 domain-containing phosphatase, etc. (1, 2). MTMR protein family consists of 16 members, of which 9 members are active phosphatases, while the rest 7 members are inactive phosphatases due to lacking of the conserved cysteine in the catalytic signature (2–4). The most well-known and distinguished effect of MTMRs is the ability to dephosphorylate phosphatidylinositol 3-monophosphate (PI(3)P) and phosphatidylinositol (3, 5) bis-phosphate (PI(3,5)P2), indicating MTMRs are involved in
