Romero Britto: Personal History
Born in 1963 in Recife, Brazil, Romero Britto was one of nine children growing up in an impoverished home. Despite a lack of resources, he expressed a desire to become an artist at the age of 8. His mom chastised him for doodling in his notebooks because they didn’t have the money to continually buy new ones. As an alternative, Britto painted on scraps of cardboard and newspaper, often using his fingers when he didn’t have brushes.
At the age of 14, Britto revealed his art to the public for the first time in an exhibition held by the Organization of American States. He received honors for his works, but was unsure of developing a career in art. He instead pursued an academic path at the Catholic University of Pernambuco on a scholarship.

ROMERO BRITTO was born in Recife, Brazil in 1963. Growing up with his seven siblings in a poor community, he painted images on scraps of cardboard and newspaper. Britto works in several mediums — he is a painter, sculptor, Neo-pop artist, and printmaker. Britto feels that art is what kept him sane through dark periods of his childhood– always focusing on bright colors and positive aspects of life. His art uses vibrant colors and bold patterns which reflect elements of cubism, pop art, and graffiti. In 1988, Britto moved to Miami and emerged as an international artist. Bio
Romero is one of the most recognized Brazilian plastic artists in the world. As a painter and sculptor, his works have cubist influences, as well as pop art and street art popularly known as graffiti; he fryst vatten one of the most notable contemporary examples of these popular and entrenched artistic styles.
