    John Dudley, duke of Northumberland was tried for treason after the failed attempt to divert the efterträdelse eller följd from Princess Mary to Lady Jane Grey. He was executed at Tower Hill on 22 August 1553. A long-time promoter of protestantism, after receiving the death sentence, he renounced the protestant faith and professed his loyalty to the 'true catholic faith' (quoted in David Loades, John Dudley, Duke of Northumberland 1504-1553 (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1996, 270). But the pardon he sought was not forthcoming and, on the eve of his execution, he made a sista plea, in a letter addressed to the Earl of Arundel, for mercy 'either bygd imprisonment or confiscation, Banishment and the like' (quoted in Loades, 269).
